## At a Glance
Pale-skinned with white-blonde hair framing a severe face. Haunted eyes that reflected constant inner turmoil. Dark feathered garments and an ethereal, unsettling presence. Beneath her clothes, the number "333" was carved into her skin — not just on her arm, but covering her entire body. She had a bizarre compulsion to collect spoons.
Birel always seemed like she was listening to something no one else could hear — because she was. The entity sharing her mind pulled at her constantly, drawing her toward the black orbs the party kept finding, whispering through dreams of inverted ziggurats and chained darkness. She fought it, but the struggle was visible in every flinch, every moment of hesitation, every time she rocked back and forth whispering apologies.
Even so, she stood with her friends when it mattered. She killed a cave dragon. She banished a demon on her first turn. She warned the party about the orbs again and again. The tragedy of Birel is that she was never fully free, but she used every scrap of autonomy she had to do good.
## Personality
Withdrawn, haunted, and constantly at war with herself. The entity in her mind made trust nearly impossible — she couldn't be sure which of her impulses were her own. Beneath the darkness, there was someone desperately trying to be better than what she'd been made into. She surrendered the sentient dagger to Kali after wrestling it from Xyrbwynn — proof that even at her most compelled, some part of Birel could still choose. Her final confession to the party, rocking and whispering "I'm sorry," was the first time she'd been fully honest with anyone, possibly including herself.

## Background
**The Pact:** Birel's family belonged to a cult serving an entity they called "He Who Waits." She found a black gem containing swirling mist, gazed into something immense, old, and mad, and made a pact with it. The entity — Tharizdun, the Chained Oblivion, also known as the Elder Elemental Eye — cursed her with visions, voices, and compulsions to commit terrible acts. She came to Waterdeep to find her sister, though her fractured mind left her uncertain whether she meant to rescue her or kill her.
**The Yawning Portal:** One of the original party members who met at the Yawning Portal and helped rescue Floon Blagmaar and Renaer Neverember from the Xanathar Guild. Even in those early days, Birel was drawn to dark artifacts — she found a black orb and was visibly unsettled by it.
**The Mind Flayer's Thrall:** During the party's war against the Xanathar Guild, Birel was captured by the guild's resident Mind Flayer and turned into a mindless thrall. She was forced to commit murders on behalf of the Unseen, a faction of shapeshifters. A mysterious lich eventually cleared her mind and returned her to Trollskull Manor, though she came back with fragmented memories and the sense of sharing her body with another entity.
**The 333 Mark:** After her return, Birel was plagued by dreams of an inverted ziggurat and a young elven woman warning her of coming darkness. She woke from one dream bleeding, having carved "333" into her arm. She later revealed the markings covered her entire body. This number connected her to the elemental cults — when Windharrow was questioned about the significance of "333," Xyrbwynn, Kali, and Birel all felt a tingle on their necks.
**The Sentient Dagger:** When Artemis Entreri arrived at Trollskull Manor carrying a jagged stone dagger inscribed with an endless maze pattern, the weapon spoke directly into Birel's mind: "Oh, there you are... after all this time... I have finally found you." Entreri also bore a "333" tattoo, binding him to the same network. Driven by desperate compulsion, Birel tackled Xyrbwynn to seize the dagger, but managed to regain enough control to surrender it to Kali.
**Heroic Moments:** Despite the entity contesting her will, Birel fought alongside the Heroes of Waterdeep with genuine courage. She delivered the killing blow to a massive cave dragon during the defense of Summit Hall. In the fungal depths beneath the Urnrayle Estate, she banished a marilith demon back to the Abyss on her first turn. And she repeatedly warned the party about the extreme danger of the black orbs — in Zuggtmoy's gardens, one pulled her into a vision where she heard massive chains being tested and snapped.
**Death:** Birel was killed by Graz'zt during the confrontation in the Dessarin Valley. The Demon Prince revealed her unwitting service to the Elder Elemental Eye before turning on her without warning. After being revived, a visibly shattered Birel finally confessed everything to the party — her family's cult, the pact, the voices, all of it — seated on the ground with her arms wrapped around her knees, rocking back and forth, whispering "I'm sorry."
