# Dramatis Personae — Rage of Dragons *A chronicler's index of the souls met on the road from Stormwreck Isle to the petrified ribcage of a dead god.* > [!quote] Volothamp Geddarm — Chronicler in Residence (and, by some accident, Cast Member) > A confession before we begin. The chronicler of this particular adventure is also *in* this particular adventure, owing to a series of events involving a prison called the Gloomcellar, a Quickling who I'm told had it in for me personally, and an archfey who briefly stuffed my soul into a pendant in place of one of our heroes. I am informed the heroes have not forgiven this, and that the fault was not, strictly speaking, mine. The reader is invited to consult the recaps and decide for themselves. > > What follows is my best accounting of the cast — friends, enemies, gods, dragons, and the occasional polite cloud giant — assembled across fifty-one sessions of what I have begun to call *The Dragon Conspiracy.* I have been generous with the heroes' allies, sparing with their enemies, and discreetly vague about a handful of matters I am still piecing together. If a name you remember is missing, it is either because they are dead, because I forgot them, or because the truth of them has not yet seen daylight. > > — *V.G.* --- ## The Heroes > [!info] Who They Are > Five Harper recruits summoned to a Neverwinter safehouse by the legendary Eather Heilean on a Harper seer's vision of dead dragons rising over the Sword Coast — joined on the road by a sixth, a firbolg druid chasing visions of his own. None of them, I think, expected the dream to prove quite so accurate. - **Astra** — Half-orc rogue. Former Gilded Gallows operative who got out and brought her best friend with her. Carries unfinished business with Ravenna of Neverwinter and a tendency to talk her way out of things she cannot fight her way out of. - **Barlen** — Half-orc cleric of Moradin. Veteran of the Dragon's Bane mercenary company until she learned the company had been hollowed out from within. Bears a charge from her god to one day cleanse Morndinvuddrrin. - **Kan'Rahd** — Firbolg druid of the Feywild. Pupil of the archfey Quandrix. Recently restored to his own body after a brief and undignified tenure inside a pendant. - **Norren** — Bugbear barbarian from a druidic family bound to the Shadowtop Cathedral. Has sworn a blood oath to The Furies. Has a habit of taking heads. Devoted to his mothers. - **Ophelia** — Half-elf ranger. The reincarnation of Aerilyn Featherstrike, a High Mage of the Dominion age — a fact she has confirmed in past-life trance and in the cruelty of nightmare. - **Valkalyn** — Elf wizard of the Starwarden Academy. Stole the Cult's research out from under them at Shilrua. Maintains the demiplane the rest of them sleep inside to keep Nymara out of their dreams. ### Traveling Companions - **Cragus** — Norren's worg and mount. Displayed something the chronicler can only describe as jealousy the day Norren mused aloud about acquiring a red dragon to ride instead. I cannot fault him; I have been wounded by rivals far less impressive. - **Lifferlas** — The awakened tree of the Goldenfields, its oldest resident. Took to Kan'Rahd as a kindred soul there, and has been the firbolg's gentlest voice during his worst hours. - **Frank** — A glorious owlbear of the Starshade Grove. Loved by all who meet him. - **Myself** — I am chiefly a liability in a fight and a respectable distraction otherwise. I once held an archfey's attention long enough for the heroes to enter her garden. The dice were unusually kind that day. --- ## The Red Daggers > [!info] Astra's Old Crew > A Neverwinter street gang turned Gilded Gallows auxiliaries turned, after a great deal of trouble, Harpers sympathizers. They ride with the party now. Whether they all *like* the party is another question. - **Nira Mistwood** — Astra's best friend and reason for getting out of the Gallows in the first place. Carries the wounds of a tiefling named Pyranikus Goldcrest who handed her to Ravenna when it was convenient for him. - **Valtair** — Stoic half-orc warrior. Slow, earnest, and growing markedly closer to Ophelia. His worst nightmare was failing to save her. He has not yet failed her. - **Kethra Nightshade** — Half-elf. Blamed Astra for the gang's exile from Neverwinter and has been working through it the hard way. Her nightmare revealed an infernal pact with Glasya — and she chose to save Valkalyn from a worse nightmare anyway. - **Gunther Boomfizzle** — Goblin sweetheart. Followed Dawn's false promises into the Dire Wood and was very nearly killed on the Maiden of the Moon's spear before the party reached him. Now believes Astra loves him, owing to a technically-true loophole in her phrasing. No one has corrected him. --- ## The Harpers > [!info] Patrons and Allies > The order that pulled the heroes out of obscurity and pushed them at the world's worst problem. It has cost them. Several of them are not on this list anymore. - **Eather Heilean** — Wise Owl of the Harpers. Legendary paladin. Recruited the heroes at the very start, and has steered the Harper effort against the Cult of the Dragon ever since. - **Niamh Silverstring** — Harper liaison out of Neverwinter. The voice on the other end of most coded messages. Steady. Patient with the chaos. - **Garrett Stormhawk** — Grizzled, one-eyed Harper veteran. Lured into the Dire Wood by Dawn and held in the Nightmare Grove until the party broke Mother Rime's grove apart. Now free, and angry about it. - **Juniper Thiltosh** — Norren's mother. Coordinated rescue efforts from the ruins of the Shadowtop Cathedral. As of Elowen's rescue, she is at the Grandfather Tree under blue lightning. - **Elowen Thiltosh** — Norren's other mother. Druid of the Circle of Dreams. Imprisoned by Nymara in a nightmare tree until session fifty. The first thing she saw on waking was her wife in danger. - **Remi Haventree** — Open Lord of Waterdeep. Has lent her name and her network to the cause. --- ## The Furies & The Friendly Fey > [!info] Old Powers, Older Grudges > The campaign has not been kind to the heroes' relationships with mortals, so the Realms have furnished them with a number of fey patrons instead. The chronicler does not consider this a clean trade. ### The Furies - **Alecto**, **Megaera**, **Tisiphone** — Three archfey of vengeance. They took Norren as their mortal champion after the Shadowtop Cathedral fell. He has been tasked with hunting Malachi and Nymara and with judging the fate of the Maiden of the Moon. They are very specific about the verbs. ### The Court of Stars - **Pellowea** — Queen of the Court of Stars. Daughter of Mab and Manitou. Knew Aerilyn Featherstrike in the long-ago. Has spoken fondly of the Maiden of the Moon as a teacher she misses. - **Quandrix** — Crystalline archfey. Kan'Rahd's mentor in the patterns underlying nature. Manifested broken in a nightmare. Whether the nightmare was prophecy or cruelty is unconfirmed. ### Caught Between - **Maiden of the Moon** — Legendary fey huntress, enslaved by Nymara, and yet — when the party invoked the Furies and Pellowea's love for her — she chose mercy and put her spear in the snow beside Gunther instead of through him. She has since fled through the wound in Karsus's flank into exile. The Furies have asked Norren to determine what comes next for her. Her confession lingers: *when people die near her, she claims their souls. All of them.* ### Smaller Allies in the Wild - **Parazas** — Norren's satyr friend. Found enchanted-asleep in a frost-touched meadow. Freed. - **Velissa Snowmantle** — A Winter Everflower of Queen Orchid's court. The only one of her sisters who refused to break under Nymara. Freed from a nightmare tree — and when Nymara fell, her three corrupted sisters came free of the archfey's hold as well. Her faith, for once, was rewarded. --- ## The Cult of the Dragon > [!warning] What the Heroes Know > An exiled sun elf named Evendor Starbane has taken the Cult of the Dragon for himself. He has resurrected the ancient red dragon Hoondarrh as the dracolich Vulkazar. He is raising the rest of the Dominion — the dragon empire that nearly exterminated elvenkind thirty thousand years ago — to do the same. Their goal: corrupt the Dracorage Mythal's Capstone on Thalas'dracon, far out in the Astral Plane, and rewrite the periodic dragon rage into *permanent madness,* sparing only those dragons who accept undeath. > > The plan requires control of three Astral Anchors in the High Forest: Shilrua (held), Myth Adofhaer (in stasis), and Darmaerth (knowingly held by the Caerilcarn). ### The Leadership - **Evendor Starbane** — Corrupted sun elf, exiled from Evermeet. Carries the soul of Elthorin Starweaver, the High Mage who betrayed and murdered Aerilyn Featherstrike at the Icewarden Citadel in the long-ago. Ophelia watched his face become Starbane's in nightmare. This is no longer a war for her — it is a reckoning. - **Vulkazar** *(The Ashen Crown)* — Red dracolich raised from the bones of the ancient Hoondarrh. Destroyed the Shadowtop Cathedral and centuries of elven history with a single descent. Operates out of the Well of Dragons in the Sunset Mountains. Norren has sworn a blood oath against him. ### The Dominion - **Mordraxis** *(The Ebony Scourge)* — Black dracolich. Holds Shilrua. Bears an eternal chest wound left by Aerilyn Featherstrike's spear in the long-ago. - **Nemetar** *(The Emerald Plague)* — Green dracolich. Destroyed at the Shadowtop Cathedral. Dracoliches, however, do not stay destroyed. - **Azurigon** *(The Storm of Eternity)* — Blue dracolich. Recently descended on the Grandfather Tree with lightning while the heroes were inside Karsus. - **Shiverfang** *(Winter's End)* — White dracolich. Resurrected. ### The Seven Drakes The Cult's elite hand. The heroes met them as a crew of bounty hunters in Nightstone — and trusted them — before Norren spotted them among the cultists in Shilrua and understood, all at once, what the rest of Nightstone had been about. - **Xolkin Alassandar** — Led the crew. Sold the heroes a tidy story about hunting a dwarf for a Waterdeep lord. - **Vyra Darkhope** — The monk the party "rescued" the night before and then handed straight back to her own people. - **Caelina Frostnote** — The bard. Sang a deeply inappropriate song about the destruction of Nightstone while the rubble was still settling. - **Azrakel Bloodrune**, **Bondar Firemane**, **Endrial Moonscar**, **Sylrissa Blackthorn** — The rest of the seven. Met, marked, and not yet settled with. ### Hands and Killers - **Kaela Voortham** — Once Valkalyn's friend at the Starwarden Academy. Murdered their other friend, Aria Netheridge. Was thralled by the Cacophony in Shilrua and serves the Cult willingly. Invades Valkalyn's dreams asking for the research she stole. - **Valthrax Leerstrom** — Operator of a soul prison containing the specters of his victims. Barlen passed through it in nightmare and met the trapped soul of her mentor Drogan Steelheart inside. *He* warned her: when Myth Adofhaer returns from stasis, the Cult intends to slaughter thousands of returning elves to power the Mythal's corruption. - **Malakar Darkblade** — Witnessed alongside Valthrax in the murder of Drogan Steelheart. Confirmed Cult operator. --- ## The Mages of Shilrua > [!info] An Open Question > When the ancient elven city of Shilrua fell, its surviving mages were transformed into Mind Flayers and bent to the will of the Cacophony — an Elder Brain the heroes have since destroyed. Two of them are free of it now, and claim they want nothing more than their spellbooks and a way out. The heroes have not decided whether to believe a word of it. - **Thalorien Duskwalker** — Former archmage of Shilrua. In the long-ago he murdered Faelar Vaeloraen — the lover of Queen Alastrarra, whose ancient fury Valkalyn carries — and chained the Elder Brain to the city's Mythal. Now an illithid pleading redemption. Ophelia and Barlen saw through his borrowed elven face with a single Dispel Magic. What he is owed remains an open argument in the party. - **Quelenna Ariessus** — Sun elf mage, likewise made illithid, likewise insisting she only wishes to leave Shilrua with what was hers. The *wrongness* the heroes felt in her company was entirely correct. Her sincerity is not. --- ## The Unseelie Court > [!info] The Nightmare in the Dire Wood > An exiled Winter Court archfey named Nymara corrupted a Netherese Mythallar and turned it on the Dire Wood. She did not meet enemies in battle; she met them in their sleep — until the heroes met *her* in the flesh, and she did not survive it. What tied her to Aster, the wronged Unseelie Court queen the heroes have so far glimpsed only in nightmare, the chronicler is still untangling. - **Nymara** — *The Glimmering.* Winter Court archfey. Held Elowen Thiltosh, the corrupted Everflowers, and much of the Dire Wood under her dream-power, and watched the heroes from a scrying pool in the chest cavity of the dead god Karsus. They came through her palace roof and killed her where she sat. With her fall the winter ran out of the Dire Wood — though her Dream Crown lies unclaimed in the frost, and the Mythallar that fed her still pulses beneath its black ice. - **Malachi** — Exiled Spring Court archfey. Nymara's partner in everything. As of session fifty, the heroes now know: he has taken the shape of Yrind Morninglight, the lover of Morgwais Nightmeadow, and has been steering the Caerilcarn restoration movement toward militant fervor from within. The entire elven resurgence in the North may have been a Unseelie long con. - **Aster** — Queen of the Unseelie Court. Bears a centuries-old grievance against the Feywild that, in her telling, betrayed and forgot her, and means to unmake it. Manifested in Kan'Rahd's nightmare with a hand around his throat. ### The Sleeping Court > [!info] The Five > Not separate beings, exactly. Five ethereal extensions of Nymara's consciousness, sustained by the corrupted Mythallar. They walked in dreams and at the edges of the Ethereal — and were cut down beside Nymara when her palace fell. - **Dawn** — The lure. The one who whispered in Gunther's ear and led him into the Dire Wood. - **Sorrow** — The messenger. Delivered Nymara's ultimatum at the Maiden's reveal. - **Midnight**, **Reverie**, **Umbra** — The other three. The chronicler confesses he could not always tell them apart. The heroes mostly cannot either. ### Faenarath's Wardens - **Mother Rime** — The hag who tended the nightmare trees in the Nightmare Grove above Karsus's shoulder. Norren took her head. He has been doing that a lot. - **Velanthe the Scorned** — An archfey bound to Malachi's palace by a lover's oath she cannot break. Tends a pocket of spring inside Karsus's ribcage. Inadvertently confessed Malachi's impersonation under a particularly absurd run of dice from my pen. - **Tianna Skyflower** — Leader of the Half-Elven Renegades. Threw her people in with Nymara on the promise that the Queen would raise a new elven kingdom in the High Forest and seat them at the head of it. So far the promise has paid out in frostbite. - **The Half-Elven Renegades** — Tianna's bandits. Sold a kingdom, given patrol duty inside a dead god's ribcage. One, Daeven Halfelm, helped the heroes into Faenarath in exchange for being allowed to walk away; an earlier captive, Silvaen, gave up the band's allegiance under interrogation and had her throat cut by Norren in service to The Furies. --- ## The Gilded Gallows > [!info] The Old Wound > A Neverwinter criminal guild and worshippers of the Lord of Shadows. Astra's former employers. The campaign's first arc-villain and the reason the Red Daggers are not, at present, in Neverwinter. - **Ravenna** *(The Viper)* — Yuan-ti crime lord. Runs the Gallows' Neverwinter cell. Killed Adira Shadowveil and broke Nira for it. Has appeared in nightmare with painful clarity. - **Decima Iscitarn** — Tiefling enforcer. Ravenna's right hand. Carries the souls of those she has killed, who whisper at the edge of hearing when she is near. Briefly served as the Red Daggers' handler. - **Pyranikus Goldcrest** — Handsome tiefling who once led the Red Daggers. Sold Nira to Ravenna when she became inconvenient. The Harpers denied him the redemption they extended to the rest of the crew. Nira gave him a look on the way out that the chronicler is told melted him. --- ## Stormwreck Isle & The First Days > [!info] Where It Began > A monastery on a remote island whose gentle cleric of Bahamut turned out to be the most important person in the campaign's first arc. The party did not realize this until they were a long way down a much darker road. - **Runara** — Cleric of Bahamut. *Also* a bronze dragon — the one who slew the blue Maelthas in the long-ago and razed the Astral Conclave's observatory in the doing — bound by oath to defend Stormwreck Isle. Astra deduced this with what I can only describe as inadvisable speed. Cannot leave her island. Has been quietly the heroes' most important window into the Dominion's history. - **Sparkrender** — Young blue wyrmling. Inheritor of Maelthas's old grudge. The first dragon the heroes faced. - **Mumpo**, **Agga** — Kobolds of the Dragon's Rest monastery. The first to applaud the heroes' arrival and the last to forget it. --- ## The Goldenfields Road > [!info] The Hill Giant War > A horde out of Grudd Haug led by a hill giant chieftain who had gotten his hands on an Astral Anchor that did not belong to him. The campaign's middle act, and the source of its first real moral compromise. - **Bad Fruul** — Hill giant chieftain. Held the Nightstone obelisk. Brought a horde down on the Goldenfields and was undone in Grudd Haug. Bargained for his life. Did not get it. - **Narcellia Varam'myr** — Spectral drow mage who had been working with Bad Fruul until the alliance soured. Slipped through a wall when the party arrived. ### The Giants Above - **Zephyros** — Cloud giant wizard. Eccentric. His floating castle picked the party up out of Nightstone like a courteous bird. Has cast *Contact Other Plane* too often and reads more visions than he can keep straight. He once asked if any of the heroes were named *Petra,* or *Wade,* or *Elmo,* or *Reese.* They weren't. - **Sansuri** — Cloud giant countess. Obsessed with dragon magic. Sent the assault on Nightstone. --- ## Dragons > [!info] Ancients and Otherwise > The wyrms of this campaign are not the abstractions they were when the chronicler first started taking notes. Three of them have spoken directly to the heroes; two of them want something specific. The Cult's plan, of course, would force every living dragon to choose between undeath and madness — so the question of *which side dragons are on* is closer to settled than it was a year ago, even if the dragons themselves have not yet caught up. - **Klauth** *(Old Snarl)* — Ancient red. Demanded Ophelia's Green Dragon Mask near Beliard. Allowed her to keep it in exchange for a future favor — and parted with the cryptic suggestion that he and the heroes were not necessarily on opposing sides. The chronicler regards this as ominous in both directions. - **Iymrith** — Ancient blue. Designed the ritual Maelthas tried to perform on Stormwreck Isle in the long-ago. - **Aerosclughpalar** — Ancient gold. Vanished while investigating the Cult at Shilrua under a half-elven cover identity: the missing Harper druid Vaeros Fireshield, a disguise Garrett Stormhawk unmasked for the heroes at the Shadowtop Cathedral. Rescued before the Cult could finish transforming him into an Elder Brain Dragon. Recovers in Valkalyn's demiplane, his Vaeros form still threaded with the faint purple veins of what was done to him. - **Hoondarrh** — Ancient red. Dead. Now Vulkazar. - **Maelthas** — Dead long ago. Iymrith's mate. The blue who tried to harness the King-Killer Star. Runara put him down. --- ## The Neverembers - **Renaer Neverember** — Son of Dagult Neverember and no friend to him. He and his wife keep the Brandarthall Estate in Waterdeep, where the heroes first sought his counsel. An early friend of the cause; he paid them generously for retrieving me from the Gloomcellar — a transaction I consider eminently sound. - **Kasdeya Firesong** — Tiefling. Renaer's wife, and his fellow householder in Waterdeep. Confident, brilliant, and considerably more direct than her husband. - **Dagult Neverember** — Lord of Neverwinter, though he keeps his seat and his comforts in Waterdeep. Subject of an exposé I am writing called *Beneath the Sapphire Crown.* The reader will not be surprised to learn it is not flattering. --- ## Past Lives > [!warning] The Long Memory > Two souls in this story have walked the Realms before. One is the heroes'. One is the Cult's. They were lovers in the long-ago. It ended badly. - **Aerilyn Featherstrike** — High Mage of the Dominion age. Witnessed the creation of the first Astral Anchor. Killed at the Icewarden Citadel by the man she loved. Has been reborn as Ophelia. - **Elthorin Starweaver** — The man who loved her. Murdered her for the patronage of Vulkazar when the High Mages would not advance him fast enough. Has been reborn as Evendor Starbane. --- ## In Memoriam - **Skarsnik** — Norren's goblin companion. Killed by Nemetar's breath at the Shadowtop Cathedral. - **Fidget** — Manic Quickling. Pledged service to the heroes, killed by a pumpkin reaper's fireball when Nymara's nightmares became flesh. - **Aria Netheridge** — Valkalyn's and Kaela's friend at the Starwarden Academy. Murdered by Kaela when Kaela's descent went too far to come back from. - **Drogan Steelheart** — Barlen's mentor in the Dragon's Bane company. Murdered by Valthrax Leerstrom and Malakar Darkblade from within the company itself. His soul is trapped in Valthrax's prison. He still finds ways to send warnings. - **Adira Shadowveil** — Gilded Gallows assassin killed by Ravenna in the long-ago. Met as a ghost in the Gloomcellar. - **Velrosa Nandar** — Lady of Nightstone. Crushed beneath her own great hall when Sansuri's cloud giants sacked the village. --- > [!quote] V.G. > The story is not over. We are, by my count, fifty-one sessions in. The archfey who ruled the Dire Wood is dead, and her winter with her — but her Dream Crown lies unclaimed, Juniper stands beneath Azurigon's lightning at the Grandfather Tree, and the Cult has not yet been troubled by any of this. New names will join this list. Some of the ones already here will leave it. > > Pull up a chair. I'll keep writing.
