# Jarl Storvald
_Frost Giant Jarl | Svardborg | Sea of Moving Ice_
## Summary
A ruthless frost giant jarl who rules from the ancient fortress of Svardborg, seeking to usher in an Age of Everlasting Ice while obsessively hunting for the legendary Ring of Winter.
%%
## Now
Leading the frost giant host against Bryn Shander, expecting to reach the gates and demand the Ring of Winter and Artus Cimber — not knowing the party holds the Ring. His column was badly mauled by the party's avalanche ambush, and Cryothar is dead.
## Appearance
Towering 20-foot frost giant with an ice-crusted white beard and piercing glacial-blue eyes. A massive icicle crown sits on his brow above an ancient mammoth fur cloak. Wields a black ice greataxe that perpetually steams with cold.
## Personality
Grief became delusion. He discovered his ancestor was Naskadi's mortal consort and decided that meant *he* was destined to free and wed her. Conducts nightly rituals, speaks to his "frozen queen," believes she watches and approves. She doesn't—she'd discard him the moment she had a better vessel. Shifts between cold calculation and explosive rage with little warning.
## Quote
_"The warm-bloods took my daughter from me. Now I shall take their world and remake it in ice eternal."_
## Background
**The Shattered King:** Once typical if ambitious. His world collapsed when smallfolk burned his young daughter Thyra alive during a raid. His grief-rage nearly destroyed the Ten Towns before Hekaton and Harshnag's intervention forced his retreat—the same giant he'd once banished for weakness now stood with the Storm King against him.
**The Temple Discovery:** When the ordning shattered, Storvald claimed abandoned Svardborg and discovered Naskadi's ancient temple beneath the fortress. Carvings revealed his ancestor had been the goddess's mortal consort. This discovery, combined with grief, created his delusion of reincarnation and destiny.
**The Dragon Prison:** Enslaved white dragons Cryothar and Isendraug by threatening their seven eggs, discovered in Thrym's temple. Isendraug remains imprisoned in the fortress depths. Cryothar is chained to Storvald's warship Krigvind as a living weapon. Their son Cryovain escaped.
**The Flawed Hunt:** Allied with Aldric Vorn to create the blod stone—but the ritual was imperfect. It tracks Artus Cimber's bloodline, not the Ring itself. This led Storvald to capture Sirac of Suzail, Artus's innocent son, as bait.
## Stats

### Traits
**Legendary Resistance (3/Day).** If Storvald fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
**Frost Rune (Icicle Crown).** While Storvald wears the crown, he can use his Ice Wolves action and Ice Armor reaction. The crown has AC 17, 50 HP, and immunity to necrotic, poison, and psychic damage; it regains all hit points at the end of each turn and turns to dust at 0 HP or when Storvald dies. Destroy it and both ice powers go dark.
**Aura of Winter.** A creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of Storvald takes 5 (1d10) cold damage. Water freezes, flames gutter.
**Frozen Rage.** While below half HP (201), Storvald's melee attacks deal an extra 1d6 cold damage and he has advantage on melee attack rolls.
---
### Actions
**Multiattack.** Storvald makes three Black Ice Greataxe attacks. He can replace any of them with a Freezing Ray.
**Black Ice Greataxe.** *Melee Attack Roll:* +13, reach 10 ft. *Hit:* 33 (4d12 + 7) slashing damage plus 13 (3d8) cold damage.
**Freezing Ray.** *Ranged Spell Attack:* +11, range 120 ft. *Hit:* 22 (4d8 + 4) cold damage, and the target must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw. On a failure it is restrained until the end of its next turn; on a success its speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
**Glacial Wrath (Recharge 5-6).** Storvald slams his axe into the ground. Each creature within 20 feet must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) cold damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail are restrained by ice until the end of their next turn.
**Ice Wolves.** Storvald summons 1d4 wolves made of ice (use the winter wolf stat block, but they are Elementals). They appear in unoccupied spaces within 30 feet, act on his initiative, obey his commands, and gain a +6 bonus to attack and damage rolls while within 30 feet of him. They vanish after 1 minute, when Storvald dies, or when he uses this action again.
### Bonus Actions
**Call of the Frozen Queen (2/Day).** Storvald invokes Naskadi's name, gaining 30 temporary hit points. His eyes glow pale blue until his next turn.
### Reactions
**Ice Armor (Requires Crown).** When a creature Storvald can see hits him with an attack, he forms a coat of ice, gaining a +6 bonus to AC against that attack. The ice then shatters, and each creature within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 18 (4d8) cold damage.
---
### Legendary Actions
**Legendary Action Uses: 3.** Storvald regains all uses at the start of his turn.
**Axe Swing.** Storvald makes one Black Ice Greataxe attack.
**Frozen Command.** One allied giant within 60 feet uses its reaction to move up to half its speed and make one attack.
**Winter's Grip (Costs 2 Actions).** One creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be restrained by ice until the end of Storvald's next turn.
---
### Lair Actions (Svardborg only — not the open-field finale)
On initiative count 20 (losing ties), while in Svardborg Storvald can take a lair action:
- **Freezing Wind:** A 30-foot cone of freezing wind blasts from a point Storvald can see. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution save or take 14 (4d6) cold damage and have their speed halved until initiative 20 of the next round.
- **Ice Spikes:** Jagged ice erupts in a 15-foot radius centered on a point within 60 feet. The area becomes difficult terrain, and creatures in the area take 10 (3d6) piercing damage (DC 16 Dex save for half).
---
### Notes
- **Break the crown.** The Frost Rune lives in his icicle crown (AC 17, 50 HP, resets every turn). Destroy it and both Ice Wolves and Ice Armor switch off — the intended pressure valve for the fight.
- **DPR ~138** across three greataxes (46/hit) — brutal single-target burst; spread attacks or spend swings on Freezing Ray control unless you want a spike. With Ice Armor and Legendary Resistance ×3 he plays tougher than a vanilla CR 20.
- **He can be broken, not just killed.** Per Storvald and the Bride / Storvald in the Open: if the Aspect of Naskadi regards him with indifference, the crusade collapses — talk him down or cut him down easy.
